Chalk Paint DIY Tray

DIY Chalk Paint Tray

Easy. Quick. Anybody can do it. That’s the kind of DIY I appreciate!

This DIY chalk paint tray is all those things. You can literally make this in less than 30 minutes and walk out the door with a sweet gift for a friend, or add this tray to your own home decor.

It is great for adding seasonal decor for a coffee table or a dining room table. You can add all types of little gifts to it to make it a great housewarming gift, “galentine”, friend gift, birthday, teacher…you get it! You can customize to match any decor or holiday with just the type of paper you use. Easy peasy.

I grabbed this lightweight wooden tray for $7 at Dollar General. It comes unfinished so you can either paint it or stain it, or leave it like it is if you like.

I grabbed a small bottle of chalk paint in the craft section of WalMart to use to paint the tray and a pack of cheap brushes. You barely use any of the paint to cover the tray.

Just squeeze a little paint out onto a paper plate to begin. I put a really light coat on the tray because I wanted some of the wood to show through.

For the bottom of the tray, I used some Christmas wrapping paper that I had. You could also use scrapbook paper for this project and I think that fabric would also work.

I measured the paper to fit the bottom of the tray and cut it to fit.

I then grabbed another brush and a jar of ModPodge. You can find Mod Podge in any craft section of your local WalMart or Dollar General or you can order on Amazon if you can’t find in the your local stores.

Paint a medium layer of ModPodge on the inside bottom of the tray. Place your paper on the bottom of the tray and use a straight edge (like a credit card) to smooth the paper towards the edges.

I then added two more coats of ModPodge to the top of the paper to create a seal and a coating.

Let dry and then you are good to go! So many options in making this DIY! Have fun!
