DIY Topiary

I see these really pretty topiaries in boutiques and shops…with a pretty price tag. I love them but I just kept looking at them and thinking…I think I can do that.

I gathered supplies at the local Wal-Mart except for the floral stem which I already had. So for less than $10 and 10 minutes I created this DIY topiary that I love! I’m addicted now so you will probably see many more of these. How many is too many for your house?

DIY Topiary

I found this little flower pot in the garden section of Wal-Mart for around $5. You could also use a terra cotta pot which you could grab for less than $3. I also grabbed a styrofoam block, a package of sheet moss, some floral tape (which I ended up not using). I add several of these olive branches at home so I used one of those but you could visit the floral aisle and find all kinds of ideas…forsythia stems would be really pretty for Spring. Depending on how many leaves or flowers are on the stem you may just need one.

First I cut the styrofoam in blocks to fit into the flower pot. I stacked two blocks and then a few little pieces around the edges to make sure it didn’t slide around.

Then I cut the sheet moss to a size a little larger than the circumference of the pot. I poked a hole in the center and stuck the floral stem through it. Then I stuck the stem into the styrofoam and pushed it down until the stem wasn’t wobbly.

I cut the edges of the moss so there is enough to tuck it in around the inside of the pot.

And voila!

You could really make these in all sizes…all kinds of greenery or floral….your imagination is your limit! These would make great centerpieces for a shower or party too!

Have fun! I can’t wait to see what you do!
